Windows 8 should still do this for you. This is what you refer to right? This is called the Jump List.
If yours isn't showing, try going to taskbar properties and then making sure the Jump List tab has the options enabled:

Thanks for the reply and yes, that's exactly what I mean. I had no idea it was called a jump list.
I checked the properties and it was already ticked, for 13 items. I changed it to 10 so i could click on 'apply' but the list is still not showing.
It just shows 3 options as in photo
The strange thing is i have a laptop with W8 and the jump list shows there.

Does the Jump List of recent places/files work on other icons like File Explorer or Internet Explorer?

Yes it does, so it seems that Notepad is the problem.

This didn't really help.
I've been googling and there seems to be nothing about notepad jumplist specifically on W8, only W7.
As it's working on my laptop, but not my PC, I assume the PC notepad is 'corrupted'.
I've tried downloading notepad 8 from windows store but it doesn't install - it says it's installing but nothing happens.

Hi,
I believe Notepad is pre-installed on Windows 8/8.1 systems. No need to download an app from a third-party source. Go to Search > Type Notepad
Try using the App Troubleshooter
If you continue having issues with the app, contact Notepad 8 Support

There seems to be something wrong with Notepad as now I have just one recent item showing on the jump list , whereas there should be 10.
I guess it's not possible to reinstall notepad ? I've tried downloading notepad classic from the store, it says downloading/installing but nothing happens.

Notepad should be installed - go to Search and type Notepad
You should see the icon appear with Notepad next to it.
a. Press Windows key + R, type REGEDIT in the run box and press Enter.b. Navigate to the location HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentversionRun.
c. In the right pane, you will see notepad listed there, right click on it and ‘Delete’ the entry.
d. Close registry. Reboot the computer and check if the issue persists.

Thanks for the detailed reply. I did the REGEDIT process only to find that notepad is not listed there. What does this mean? It's obviously on my computer as I use it all the time, it's just the jumplist that's the problem.
I haven't done the scan yet as I see it needs a long time. Also reading the comments it doesn't seem to work for a lot of people.!
